My Gemfile for any new project immediately grew longer than Gandalf's beard. Unfortunately, using Gems comes with downsides. On the practical side, pulling in third-party libraries exposes your app to supply-chain attacks that are increasingly common. However, what's even worse is that most Gems are pure bloatware. They add thousands of lines of code you'll never need, and churn constantly. The alternative, obviously, is to build everything from scratch. In this talk, we'll look at some examples of how some well-known gems can be boiled down to a single file that you can copy-paste to any new project. We'll also look at the limits of this approach, and when you actually should reach for that Gem. How fast can you get from an empty git repo to a deployed website? However, nothing is as it seems. While frantically switching between slides and code editor, I will reveal and explain my two new gems and will use them to turn a new Ruby on Rails project into a very weird static site generator. We'll create the initial DB tables and add some records ... wait, what? Database tables? In a static site generator??? Yes, you heard me right! Afterwards, we'll have our tiny release party! After opening its gates at Rails World 2025 in Amsterdam, the Ruby embassy (a "fun bureaucratic activity") is opening a branch office at our local Meetup group. Q&A: Call for Speakers is OPEN Socializing (open end/as long as the location permits) TALKS Talk 1: Henning Koch: "Limits of Hypermedia" Hypermedia frameworks like htmx or Unpoly are positioning themselves as simpler alternatives to single-page applications. Yet many of us recall earlier server-rendered experiences as slow, cumbersome and limited. But just as modern React is unrecognizable from its early days, hypermedia frameworks have improved radically over the last decade. Today's server-rendered approaches effectively handle UI problems traditionally thought to require extensive client-side scripting. At the same time, hypermedia apps have some surprising limitations that you might not even have on your radar. This talk will help you decide whether adopting hypermedia makes sense for your project, especially if your experience is mostly with SPAs. We will address questions frontend developers typically have: - Is it possible to achieve the same responsiveness that users have come to expect from SPAs? - How would dynamic forms with dependent fields and inline validation work without extensive JavaScript? - Can server-side rendering manage intricate UI interactions, such as multi-step modals, optimistic rendering, and client-side state preservation? - Where does state go when I don't have components on the client? After ten years of building both hypermedia apps and SPAs, I'm eager to share what works and what doesn't. I hope that by the end of my talk you'll know all the trade-offs to decide when hypermedia can simplify your stack, and when an SPA remains the better fit. It wasn’t related to tech-stack or a particular database/cloud issue nor did we have very bad code quality or any N+1 query issues. Instead, it turned out to be the cumulative result of small mistakes in some services. In this talk, we will see how we arrive at those mistakes, and how you can avoid them earlier on in the development process.   Description: Our next meetup will be especially fun! Every attendee has an option to hold a lightning talk (5 minutes) during the user group. If you absolutely can not (do not want) to give a talk, you can opt-out, just let us know. If you need any help, to select a gem, find enough information, prepare slides, test-drive the talk, or anything else talk-related let us know, we'll willingly help you out! Remember, it's just 5 minutes, and trust us - it will be just great! Speaking publicly is always good for you. You can learn so many things while preparing for a (even for a short) talk. Talk delivery skills are also extremely important for professionals. Practicing it will bring you to absolutely new level of communication with your peers. The Gem you are speaking about has to start with a alphabetic letter that is assigned to you (the speakers) randomly. The attendees of our last meetup already have one assigned. If you don't have one yet ping us we will assign one to you. Lets define some rules: If your Gem is a lesser known Gem (less than 1million downloads on Rubygems.org) make a high level introduction to it. If you speak about a well known Gem like eg JSON 1.8.0 tell us about one particular interesting internal aspect (remember you have max 5min) If you want to make it easy for yourself and create your own Gem we expect you to explain to us the process of creating your own Gems. If you want to make it very easy for you and simply fork a Gem on Github you will have to make presentation about Git and Github and the process of forking ;-) OR You will have to make a presentation about why and what exactly you have changed in your fork and why a pull request didn't cut the mustard. So we expect some serious meat here ;-) At the end of all the talks we will do a voting MSDRGPS (München sucht den Ruby Gems Presentation Superstar) and the top 3 speakers will get a RubyMine License (or Upgrade) sponsored by JetBrains. Please send me the name of the Gem you will talk about until Monday, July 1st so we can put the list of speakers and topics on our website. Send your actual presentation up until Monday, July 8th in PDF form or MP4 (if its some screen cast). We will prepare all presentations on single computer so we do not waste time for connecting and disconnecting different hardware. We absolute prefer presentations about lesser known Gems and internals of well known Gems. For the other categories we will only allow one presentation each (first come, first serve). This might be a longer evening, therefore we will start our talks and our introduction round at 19:30. please be in time and we will make sure that pizza and beverages are there at 19:00.
